Back among the big boys: Darvel’s road to the Premier Division
Darvel FC have completed a remarkable turnaround, and this season the Vale are back where many in the town feel they belong. The club are listed among the Premier Division sides in the West of Scotland League for 2026–27, rubbing shoulders with Ayrshire neighbours Hurlford United, Glenafton Athletic, Irvine Meadow XI and Kilbirnie Ladeside.

It is a far cry from where the club stood less than a year ago. When former Rangers striker Nacho Novo walked through the door at Recreation Park, he inherited a squad with just nine points from ten games, sitting third from bottom of the First Division. The Spaniard had been coaching at Drumchapel United before taking the hot seat, and the club said he brought a strong passion for developing talented players.

Novo steadied the ship, guiding Darvel to ninth of sixteen in the First Division, and a shake-up of the Scottish pyramid did the rest. The 2025–26 campaign was a transitional season, with nine Premier Division clubs moving up to the new Lowland League West, opening the door for Darvel’s return to the top flight of the West.

For supporters, the promotion restores some pride after a difficult spell. The club finished bottom of the Premier Division in 2024–25, just a couple of years after its most famous chapter. Darvel were reigning champions going into 2022–23, and in January 2023 they beat cinch Premiership side Aberdeen 1-0 at home in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup, a result that briefly made the town the talk of Scottish football. A year later came more silverware, as Darvel beat Auchinleck in the semi-final on their way to lifting the Scottish Junior Cup for the first time.
Founded in 1889, the Vale play at Recreation Park, which holds 2,200, and with local rivals back on the fixture list, the terraces should have plenty to shout about this winter.
Elsewhere in the valley, the grassroots game continues at Galston, where Barrmill Stadium on the south bank of the River Irvine is home to Galston United AFC — a ground that, before football took over, hosted greyhound racing from 1933 until 1967.
